Copycat Frisch's Big Boy Burger

For the burger:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 Tbs salt
  • 1 Tbs ground pepper

For the tartar sauce:

  • 1 1/2 c mayonnaise
  • 3 Tbs dill relish
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 Tbs minced garlic
  • 1 Tbs dried minced onion
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

To serve:

  • 6 to 8 buns
  • dill pickle chips
  • sliced American cheese

Mix the burger ingredients and form into 6 to 8 patties. Frisch's burger patties are very thin, probably 1/8 lb, but I make regular burger patties that are about 1/4 lb each. Then you can make either double or single burgers.

Stir together all the tartar sauce ingredients until well mixed and refrigerate at least 4 hours so the flavors can meld. Yes, tartar sauce on a burger. Trust me on this.

When you're ready to eat, grill the burger patties about 6 mins per side until well done. If you're making double burgers, top half with a slice of American cheese, pile another patty on top and top that with a slice of cheese as well. Close the grill and let the cheese melt before putting the stack onto a burger bun.

I put tartar sauce on the top and bottom bun and top with a few pickles. And serve with extra tartar sauce :)
